We need to look at the leading causes of vision impairment and blindness in the U.S. Most of these are primarily age related eye diseases (but note that not all of them are). Those conditions include macular degeneration, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma, are affecting Americans more than ever before.
There are disturbing facts that the number of Americans with age related eye disorders and vision impairment is expected to double within the next three decades. Take into account that in 2000 there were 119 million people affected. The total in 2030 is expected in be 357 million.
